CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The affordable housing crisis continues in Charlotte.
Nearly 1,000 people stood in line for only 185 available apartments on Freedom Drive that have been deemed “affordable.”
The apartments at The Mezzanine at Freedom are available because of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership. It is a non-profit meant to expand affordable housing to low-income families. Organizers say there's a huge need for affordable living in the Queen City.
“This shows that there is a tremendous demand they are incredibly hard to find, apartments people can afford right now, and prices are increasing in Charlotte,” Julie Porter said. She is the president of the organization.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership is known for creating the Gables at Druid Hills. It's a 63-unit senior project that opened back in 2003.
