RALEIGH, N.C. -- The city of Raleigh is left wondering what could have been after it was the Queen City, and not the Oak City, that announced it will be home to Major League Soccer’s 30th team on Tuesday.
Accoring to MLS, the team is expected to play in 2021 at Bank of America Stadium.
So what happens to Raleigh’s proposed $1.9 billion downtown south stadium, which won't have a Major League team attached to it?
Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin says the Triangle's two professional soccer teams still need a new home.
"I was at the Courage game, their championship game, by the way we do have national worldwide champions here, it took me 45 minutes to get to the stadium. We need a new outfit, I don't think the MLS award impacts that," Mayor Baldwin said.
The North Carolina Football Club also issued a statement Tuesday congratulating the Queen City and welcoming the new competition.
