CHARLOTTE, N.C. – While short term rental properties are quick, convenient, and often cheap, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says they are causing public safety concerns.

  • CMPD says its “rental ordinance unit” has been compiling a list of properties officers had responded to calls at
  • Officers say they have identified 50 of those properties, but believe there are more
  • Property owners can “voluntarily register” their property

Sites like Airbnb are becoming increasingly popular. But with the growing popularity, police officers have growing concerns.

CMPD says officers are responding to calls for underage drinking, armed robberies, and even a homicide.

The “rental ordinance unit” compiled a list of properties that officers had been responding to calls at. Officers say they have been able to identify 50 of those properties, but they believe there are more.

Property owners can “voluntarily register” their properties with the unit. They will then receive alerts of fights, disturbances, or other issues that occur on their property.

"In situations like that, you could have a party, someone rents the place and they have a big party, the owner is not aware of it, CMPD, we get on scene, we have no idea who the owner is, and therefore we sometimes don't have the tools to shut the party down," Lt. Mike Ford said.

Police say that by registering your unit, you can be educated on code enforcement, fraud investigations, and evictions.
