CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A teacher in Mecklenburg County is starting up a new clothing store inside Olympic High School. Unlike traditional stores, all the items inside will be free.

Olympic High School Teacher Amanda Rhoden says she got the idea from a friend who was visiting from out of state.

“She told me about this project that she was working on and she was going to start a store in her high school,” Rhoden said. “I loved the idea and I approached my principal about it and he loved it.”

The project is to have a free boutique-style store filled with clothes, footwear, and other accessories for students.

“The outlet is going to have anything from formal, to informal wear and attire,” Rhoden said. “It will also have shoes, accessories, and handbags.”

Olympic High School student Janiya Nicholson is one of many students helping set up the store.

“It might be something they have never had or seen,” Nicholson said. “Being able to see something like that can make them really excited. I just feel like it's good for me to help them because I have been through it too.”

“I think that a student just needs to feel comfortable,” Rhoden said. “With social media and all the pressure sometimes for students, it’s not even about fitting in, but it’s about feeling comfortable in whatever it is you are wearing.”

Rhoden says they hope to have the store up and running in the next few weeks.

Those interested in donating can drop off items at the Olympic High School front office.
