NORTH CAROLINA -- If you are frustrated with campaign signs in right of ways well past campaign season, you're not alone.

  • Current law says unless you're the candidate, you can't take them down
  • A new law is taking effect Sunday saying that, after 30 days, anyone can clean the campaign signs out of right of ways
  • Under the new law, it would still be illegal to steal, deface, vandalize or unlawfully remove a sign

The current law says unless you're the candidate, you can't take them down.

Now, all of that is about to change. A new law is taking effect Sunday saying that, after 30 days, anyone can clean the campaign signs out of right of ways.

"What we're trying to do is make sure there is ample time if a candidate would like to recover those signs, that they have time to pick them up," says Pitt County Senator Don Davis. "Let's run hard elections but once the election is over, it's over, let's go collect the signs and do whatever we are going to do with them."

Under the new law, it would still be illegal to steal, deface, vandalize or unlawfully remove a sign before the established deadline.
