WILMINGTON, N.C. – Downtown Wilmington’s new trolleys are up and running.

On Monday, the city hosted an unveiling event in the south front district.

This new model is more cost-effective and environmentally friendly than the initial model.

The new model also has a different route. This trolley will stop in all five downtown districts.

WAVE Executive Director Albert Eby says the project transformed into something that would greatly benefit the downtown area.

"We think that this is a good start. Certainly the trolley has kind of evolved into this. We think it's going to be a huge improvement, certainly, to what we've been doing downtown," Eby said.

After the ribbon was cut, attendees were allowed aboard the Port City trolley for the inaugural ride.
