JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. --  Every Friday morning, "Pup Cups in the house,” can be heard in the halls of Princeton Elementary in Johnston County.

  • Pup Cups helps the students with counting money and learning responsibility
  • Students sell coffee and hot chocolate to teachers to fund supplies and field trips
  • The concept is modeled after Bitty and Beau’s in Wilmington

Students in the K-5 exceptional children’s classes go door-to-door with a beverage cart called Pup Cups selling coffee and hot chocolate to teachers.

“What Pup Cups does it just kind give our kids a voice,” said teacher Bridgette Winstead. “it gives our kids a sense of responsibility. It really helps them get out into the school and kind of put their face out there.”

The concept is modeled after Bitty and Beau’s in Wilmington.

Pup Cups helps the students with counting money and learning responsibility, while sharpening their social skills.

“Since the very first time we threw on those aprons and we gave them their jobs, they have owned it," Winstead said. "Just their confidence and their self-esteem within themselves. It is just amazing to see their growth.”

All the money the cart has raised in its first year funds supplies and future field trips.

“We wanted to empower our students and let them know they were able and capable of doing so much more. Not only to let our students know that, but to let our school know that, let our community know that and know our kids are capable of doing anything and I think Pup Cups has absolutely proven that,” Winstead said.
