RALEIGH, N.C. -- Families who currently live in a Ronald McDonald House or have in the past had the chance to make some extra special memories at the NC State Fair on Monday.

  • "Michael's Day" is named after a young fair fan who lost his battle to cancer in 2014.
  • Attendee 2-year-old Sebastian had open-heart surgery seven weeks ago.
  • Some parents went to the fair for their children who could go.

The day is deemed "Michael's Day" after a young fair fan who lost his battle to cancer in 2014.

Cassidy Morris brought her 2-year-old son Sebastian, who had open-heart surgery just seven weeks ago.

"I wasn't sure that we could come, but I wanted to try because it would be a break for us and something fun. He doesn't get to do stuff like this a lot," she said.

Other parents took in the fun for themselves in hopes of bringing some joy back to their kids who were too sick to attend.

"We get to be ourselves," said Tanya Young of Durham. "I am not hooking up any medicines. I am not giving any medicines. I actually get to smile and enjoy myself. So this is priceless."
