Stuart Cramer High School Assistant Principal Lisa Rothwell faces six counts of sex offenses.

When the 34-year-old was initially arrested, she had a $1 million bond.

During a bond hearing on Friday afternoon, District Attorney Locke Bell asked Gaston County District Judge Pennie Thrower to set Rothwell’s bond at $50,000.

He said after speaking with the victim and considering the bond amount set in a case of a male teacher facing similar charges last month, the reduction was appropriate.

"The case male-female is reversed but other than that is very similar and that's enough to ensure she doesn't flee,” Bell said.

However, Thrower didn’t agree and set the bond at $100,000.

"Given the serious nature of the charges, given she was person who was not only a teacher but in an assistant principal position, I have some concerns about that,” Thrower said.

Meanwhile, current and former students from Rothwell’s school went to the courthouse to support her.

Stuart Cramer Graduate Jasmine Morgan spoke about the difference Rothwell made in her life.

“If Ms. Rothwell wouldn’t have been there for me while I was going through a lot of stuff. I probably wouldn’t be here today,” Morgan said.

Morgan and teacher friend Alison Majewski don’t believe the allegations.

"Stories get misconstrued; things can be said, taken the wrong way. I still believe in her and she has a lot to give to a lot of people.” Majewski said.

Bell who said he couldn’t provide his opinion on the case based on the rule of ethics said he planned to discuss with members of his office whether to send it to a grand jury.

"She's presumed to be innocent in this matter under the law and we will address the charges as they come forward,” Bell said.

The bond reduction comes with some conditions for Rothwell, including wearing a GPS monitor, following a curfew, undergoing a mental health assessment and staying away from Gaston County School properties.

However, Rothwell’s supporters were satisfied with the bond amount.

“I definitely feel like it was some kind of victory moving from $1 million to $100,000,” Rothwell said.

They also said even if the allegations are true, their perspective on Rothwell wouldn’t change.

A teacher who was in Cramerton on Friday didn’t want to go on camera, but said parents trust educators with their children so if Rothwell is guilty, she must face the consequences.

Rothwell has been suspended with pay.

Her attorney said he expects the case to work out quickly but didn’t elaborate on his statement.
