WAKE COUNTY, N.C. – An iconic tree in downtown Raleigh is slated to come down Thursday.
- A 100-year-old Oak Tree is being cut down in Nash Square Thursday.
- The tree has become a safety concern.
- It's the one that sort of hangs over the sidewalk onto Martin Street.
The Willow Oak at the corner of Nash Square will be cut down due to safety concerns.
Martin Street will be closed in the area. The work is expected to be done by 6 p.m.
The tree is estimated to be between 100 and 120 years old.
Some residents took home souvenirs from what was cut down.
City officials harvested its acorns and hope to plant a sapling from them in Nash Square soon.
