CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A doctor who was shot by a stray bullet while in town for a business meeting has died.

Dr. John Holaday, 74, had been in critical when he was hit in the back of the neck along College Street in uptown Charlotte.

Holaday was the founder and CEO of DisposeRX. It is a company helping to fight the opioid crisis. They released a statement about the deadly incident.

"Words cannot describe the immense sadness and grief we feel in losing our leader, mentor, colleague and friend," said DisposeRx President William Simpson. "While we will continue to struggle with the senseless and tragic way in which John died, we will honor him every day in the way that we operate and represent DisposeRx. We are more committed than ever to fulfilling his dreams."

Rep. Alma Adams offered her condolences Sunday.

A coworker on social media says Holaday, a resident of Bethesda, Maryland, died surrounded by family.

Just a block away, crews were battling a restaurant fire. Responders arrived within minutes, but ultimately it wasn't enough to save his life.

"We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the emergency responders and staff of Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center for the amazing care and compassion that they showed to John and his family during the most difficult of days," said Denis Connaghan, DisposeRx Chief Financial Officer.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, a fight broke out inside the Epicentre and 16-year-old Raheem Shacklette is now charged with murder.
