CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Congressman-elect Dan Bishop (R) says he wants to find his voice when he heads to the nation's capital. That voice looks like it will be shared.

“I'm going to let people know there that I support President Trump and that's what I told voters I would do and that's what I'm going to do,” Bishop said.

The feeling between the two politicians is mutual. President Donald Trump visited North Carolina's 9th District Monday. It's a stop Catawba College Politics Professor Michael Bitzer says benefited Bishop.

“It was a very effective campaign technique and strategy going into a very competitive election,” Bitzer said.

Bishop beat Democrat Dan McCready by about 4,000 votes. It was a higher margin than last year's race, but Bitzer says the lower turnout could have played a role. Spectrum News asked Bishop how he plans to appeal to more Independents and moderate Democrats next year.

“I'm always a candid person. The other thing is let's stay in dialogue. Even when we disagree, let's disagree on as agreeable terms as possible,” Bishop said.

Bitzer says Democrats should follow a similar aproach to this year's race.

“Dan McCready was a good fit for the district,m even though he only lost by two points. If someone like an AOC [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] type candidate had run, that two points would have ballooned into 20 points,” Bitzer said.

The clock is ticking. Campaigning for the 2020 election will start soon.
