RICHMOND COUNTY, N.C. -- A steady flow of voters made a pit stop Wednesday at the only early polling station in Richmond County.

“It was smooth, easy, quick. In there and out of there,” said voter Evlin Wayne Greene. “I like early voting, because you can come and get things out of the way and go back to your regular routine,” said Marvin Spencer of Hamlet.

There is only one question on the ballot here: the 9th congressional district matchup between Republican Dan Bishop and Democrat Dan McCready.

Some voters were not willing to share who they picked inside. “I listened to what the candidates had to say and then make my decision based on that,” Greene said.

Others were quick to voice their support for a candidate, including Bessie Terry of Richmond County, who said she voted for McCready. “We need a change, especially with Trump in office. We need a change,” she said.

Richmond County voted for Obama twice, before picking Trump in 2016. Last fall, McCready carried the county by a slim margin, with just over 50 percent of the vote.

“I’m just going to be honest with you. That was a shock to us as well,” said Crystal Morrrison, the chair of the Richmond County Democratic Party.

Considering it is a special election, she said she thinks the number of people who have voted early in the county so far is “good." She said many people in Richmond County are concerned about healthcare and education, and hopes McCready’s campaign message will resonate.

“Locally we have had a great crowd that has been interested and has been waiting patiently to go ahead and take advantage of our second chance,” she said.

The county’s Republican chair was not available for an on-camera interview Wednesday.

Election day is Tuesday, Sept. 10. Early voting continues through Sept. 6.
