MONROE, N.C. -- Nic Weber’s positivity is contagious.
- Weber has autism and goes to the Wolfe School in Monroe which teaches students with disabilities
- In March last year Nic was in a gas fire accident. Nearly 60 percent of his body was burned
- But despite the hurdles Nic's passion for positivity never weakens
Weber has autism and goes to the Wolfe School in Monroe which teaches students with disabilities. Many of the students are non-verbal but Nic is a talker.
However, last year his ability to talk or do just about anything stopped.
“It's a phone call that changes your life. It's a phone call no one ever thinks they're going to get,” said Nic’s mom Tracy Buchanan.
In March last year Nic was in a gas fire accident. Nearly 60 percent of his body was burned.
“His corneas were burned. His eyelids were burned. His ears were burned. His face was burned. All the way down his body,” Buchanan said.
He spent 11 months in the hospital.
Michelle Testa is his teacher and said while he was away some of the students wondered where he had gone.
“Using even communication devices where he was programmed on their device they would ask for Nic. One of his friends in our class asked the first day Nic was gone. He was aware something was off,” Testa said.
Last month that student and Nic reunited when Nic returned to school.
“For a long time I never thought we would get home, much less get back to school,” Buchanan said. “Nicholas has basically broken through every obstacle in his path up until now.”
There's been a lot of obstacles. The scars and the new wheelchair are reminders.
But despite the hurdles Nic's passion for positivity never weakens.
