RALEIGH, N.C. -- A mom is fighting for parents' rights to have "seizure plans" in North Carolina schools.

  • Sam's Law was first introduced in eastern Texas. It's named after Samantha Watkins, who died in 2016 after experiencing an epileptic seizure.
  • Andrea Weigand's son, Zachary, was diagnosed with epilepsy three years ago.
  • With Sam's Law, every parent who has a student with epilepsy would be able to petition to have a plan in place.

Andrea Weigand's son, Zachary, was diagnosed with epilepsy three years ago. Since then, she's worked with Zachary's school to let them know what to do if he has a seizure. With Sam's Law, every parent who has a student with epilepsy would be able to petition to have a plan in place.

"Every summer before school starts, the nurse and I are in contact with each other. We develop a seizure action plan and that is in conjunction with medical professionals. We make sure we know if he has a seizure... what you do, how long do you wait before you call an ambulance, what you have on hand, what do kids need to know" said Weigand.

Sam's Law was first introduced in eastern Texas. It's named after Samantha Watkins, who died in 2016 after experiencing an epileptic seizure. If signed into law in North Carolina, it would go into effect the 2021 school year.
