The Gilmer Street Theater opened in 1929 with a showing of "Illusion", a film starring Buddy Rogers and Nancy Carroll.

At the time it housed the state's top sound system.

The theater was modernized back in 1991 with digital projectors and attracted crowds with affordable ticket prices.
