ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. – The man accused of trying to rob a home in Mebane before being attacked by an 11-year-old boy with a machete went before an Orange County judge Monday.

  • The man who allegedly was attempting to rob a home in Mebane, but was attacked by an 11-year-old boy with a machete, was in court Monday.
  • Authorities are looking for two accomplices.
  • He left the hospital after authorities took him to UNC following the attack, but won't face charges for fleeing because he technically wasn't in custody.

Officials believe 19-year-old Jataveon Hall broke into a Mebane home and forced the boy, Braydon Smith, into a closet while he attempted to steal electronics.

But Smith, who is a star baseball player on several area teams, got a hold of a machete and hit Hall in the back of the head.

Authorities say Hall ran from the home once he realized he was bleeding. He later showed up at UNC Hospital in Hillsborough for treatment, where warrants were then taken out and Hall would be arrested upon discharge from the hospital.

Hall was then transferred to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill due to the severity of his wound.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, Hall was seen walking out the door of the Chapel Hill hospital Friday night, wearing a hospital gown with a cup of water in his hand and a bandage wrapped around his head.

Authorities say Hall was arrested Sunday in Burlington after they received a tip that he was at his mother's apartment.

A judge set a bond for Hall at $175,000 and he is set to return to court sometime in July.

Now, police are looking for two more people who helped Hall.

Over the weekend, the hospital and sheriff's office put out conflicting statements about who was responsible for keeping tabs on hall while he was in the hospital.

The sheriff says he'll work with the hospital to make sure this doesn't happen again.
