BOONE, N.C. – An Appalachian State University fraternity has been banned from campus for four years.

  • The Omicron Alpha Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity has been banned until 2023
  • They were suspended from campus in 2017 and recently applied for reinstatement
  • A spokesperson from the school says it was the fraternity’s persistent pattern of concerning conduct that led to the decision

The Omicron Alpha Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity has been banned until 2023, when all current members are expected to have graduated.

The fraternity was suspended from campus in 2017, and when they recently applied for reinstatement they received a letter from the Director of Student Engagement and Leadership Jeff Cathey. It cites social media posts, police being called to their members’ homes and student misconduct proceedings for members as a reason the university decided to ban the fraternity.

The director also writes that during suspension the fraternity was to cease all activities on and off campus—which they did not do.

A spokesperson from the school says it was the fraternity’s persistent pattern of concerning conduct that led to the decision. The director of student engagement says he will not reconsider reinstating the fraternity until they have “ceased for a sufficient period to demonstrate a true break from the current chapter culture.”
