CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- As UNC Charlotte students return to campus for summer classes, some spent their afternoon outside the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center asking for change.

Students with March for our Lives say they have tried meeting with Charlotte City Council members and Mecklenburg County comissioners, but they are dismayed at how slowly elected officials are moving in the wake of the UNC Charlotte shooting.

Monday afternoon, students and NAACP supporters called out officials, including Mayor Vi Lyles for their lack of cooperation.

"They don’t want to do much at a local level because it can cause some conflict,” says UNC Charlotte March for our Lives Director Cade Lee. “But ultimately, if funding gun violence research and funding an educational program reduces the deaths that we see, then it’s worth it.”

Mayor Lyles said she is meeting with the students this Thursday to discuss ideas on the table.

As for the students, they told us they won't stop with just city and county officials. They are planning on soon taking this to Raleigh on June 15 as well.
