The shootings happened February 26, 2017, on North Caldwell Street, just a few blocks away from where the CIAA championship game was about to tip off.
The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office confirmed with Spectrum News that the charges had been dropped. Court documents read in part, “In case, the only evidence trying the defendant to this offense is a suspect vehicle that was rented by the defendant. There is no evidence that the defendant was driving the vehicle during the offense or even an occupant of the vehicle during the time of the offense."
This was a disturbing case for police -- more than 100 shots fired into cars, homes, and buildings.
Remarkably, no one was hurt. The police arrested then-27-year-old Sammie Benson (aka Blac Youngsta), 23-year-old Frederick Black, and 20-year-old Antavius Gardner. Each were charged with six counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied property and felony conspiracy.
Multiple cars were hit and bullet casings were found all over the place.
Back in 2017, investigators did not speak about a motive, but rapper Young Dolph said he was there and wrote songs about the incident on his album in 2017, including “100 Shots,” “In Charlotte,” and “Bulletproof.” There appeared to be a connection between him and Young Dolph.
The CIAA Tournament is moving from Charlotte to Baltimore in 2021.
