LINCOLNTON, N.C. -- The Lincoln County Historical Association is digging up some history this week and inviting the public to help.

  • The Michael-Butt-Brown Pressley house was built in 1819
  • Volunteers and are digging behind the home to see what's there
  • If you would like to volunteer, visit the association's website

Right off downtown Lincolnton's West Main Street sits the Michael-Butt-Brown Pressley house built in 1819. January Costa is the curator for the association and she's had her eye on the ground behind the Pressley house for some time now.

“We basically came out here saying, ‘OK, there's got to be something in the ground here,’” Costa said. “Everybody basically was like, ‘there's nothing left, well we've proven them wrong.’”

The historical association started digging last week and quickly found a whole foundation. Costa says she thinks it’s part of a kitchen and they also found pottery.

“You can see how close to the surface it is. I was surprised a lawnmower didn't hit this when they were cutting grass,” she said.

It’s not just scientists doing the digging. The association is asking for more volunteers, giving them a chance to get their hands dirty. For more information, visit the association's website.
