CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Just a little more than 48 hours after the deadly shooting on UNC Charlotte's campus, and less than 24 hours after someone was shot and killed at an apartment complex near the school, activities have started again on campus.

  • A gunman killed two people and injured four Tuesday
  • Doctors say it is best to share your emotions and talk to people about their experiences
  • Several fitness studios are offering free classes to help people heal

Doctors say especially in today's technology age, with minute by minute updates on social media and information traveling so fast, a violent event like that one can be difficult for anyone, especially when something happens in a space thought to be a safe haven.

They say the most important thing is to ask for help whether it's from family, friends, or members of your community. Speaking out can make a huge difference for those trying to move forward.

“Helping people through this can be difficult. But, I think that one of the things people need to remember is that people should talk to people. They should talk to their families. They should talk to their friends. They should share the experiences and the feelings that they are having and not keep it locked in. That’s one of the worst things you can do,” Dr. Rodney Villanueva, a psychiatrist at Atrium Health, said.

UNCC officials say they will continue to have support staff and their CAPS counselors available for students and staff in the upcoming days.

Several fitness studios in the greater Charlotte area have announced they will be offering free classes such as cycling, barre, and yoga for students and staff as they continue to heal.
