INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. -- The quick response of a school resource officer may have saved a second grader's life.

  • On Monday, an 8 year old at Porter Ridge Elementary School started choking on a chicken nugget
  • An SRO performed three abdominal thrusts on the boy and the chicken nugget dislodged
  • The deputy is the school's first SRO

On Monday during lunch at Porter Ridge Elementary School, 8-year-old Kevin Ramirez-Villa Gomez started choking on a chicken nugget. He fell to the floor, gasping for air.

That's when Deputy Sheriff Tracey Hill jumped into action.

The deputy, who is serving her first year as a school resource officer, performed three abdominal thrusts on the 8 year old before the chicken nugget dislodged.

Kevin as well as school staff are thankful Hill was around at the right time.

“Their job is multi-faceted. Sometimes the perception of why we have them (SROs) in the school is one thing, but they become part of our community,” said Cheryl Lawrence, Porter Ridge Elementary School principal.

Deputy Hill is Porter Ridge Elementary School’s first SRO.
