CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte police officers say a man set his girlfriend’s mattress on fire, displacing dozens and causing more than $75,000 in damages. Some residents say they are fearful that the complex could be targeted again.

  • Officers say he was angry with a resident, broke into a unit and set a mattress on fire
  • The resident says McClurkin was her boyfriend

The damage left behind from a fire is hard to miss. The fire comes just weeks after another intentionally set fire at Hunters Pointe Apartments. News of an arrest is giving residents some relief.

Jerika Barber still has a home at Hunter's Pointe apartments, but she's one of the lucky ones. Many of her neighbors lost theirs when a raging fire ripped through their building early Sunday morning.

“Your one decision became a domino effect that changed a lot of people's lives,” she said. “That right there is scary.”

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says 31-year-old Rickey McClurkin is now facing arson and robbery charges. He was arrested on Tuesday.

Officers say he was angry with a resident at the complex, broke into her unit and set a mattress on fire.  That resident confirmed McClurkin was her boyfriend.

They say McClurkin is not a suspect in the arson at Hunters Pointe that happened back in March. They have not made any arrests in that case and they don't believe the two fires are connected.
