NORTH CAROLINA -- History is being made at Brooks Global Studies School in Greensboro. Fourth grade students proposed two bills that are working their way through the General Assembly.
- House Bill DRH10185-LG-66 would name Moravian cookies as the official state cookie of North Carolina.
- The thin spice cookies are made from various ingredients, including molasses, allspice, and ginger.
- The cookies have been made and sold in Winston-Salem since the 1950s.
Just last week, the state House approved a bill to name the Moravian cookie the official state cookie. The idea originated with 4th graders at Brooks Global Studies School.
The students also proposed the U.S.S. North Carolina be the official state battleship. Teacher John Phillips, who has been teaching for more than 20 years, assigns his students to propose state legislation each year.
Phillips says he has his 63 students each come up with a state bill idea, then they narrow it down to two.
The last time young students proposed legislation that was passed in North Carolina was 1993.
The thin spice cookies are made from various ingredients, including molasses, allspice, and ginger.
The cookies have been made and sold in Winston-Salem since the 1950s; however, they have been a part of North Carolina since the 18th century, when Moravian settlers first came to America.
The bill will now move to Senate.
