CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Former Charlotte City Council member Kenny Smith announced that he will not be running for the vacant 9th Congressional District seat.

This comes after a new election was called during the Mark Harris hearing due to election fraud allegations.

Smith's name was tossed around as a possible contender, along with contender Dan McCready who announced his second District 9 campaign.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Smith said that the 2019 election isn't the right time for him due to his family and work commitments.

Union County GOP Chair Dan Berry ran for the seat in 2012 and is considering another go. Former Union County state senator Tommy Tucker could also run.
