GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- There may be a new way for people in Gaston County to get to the big city.

  • CATS is proposing an east-west light rail line that would go into Gaston Co.
  • The extension would be part of the 2030 plan
  • In February, the CATS board will decide whether or not to approve it

The light rail could be expanding to Gaston County.

The Charlotte Area Transit System is pitching an east-west light rail that would go to Gaston County.

The extension would be part of their 2030 plan, and the light rail would be built on the bridge over the Catawba River.

It would start with the first stop in Belmont and other stops in Gaston County thereafter.

Transportation experts say it would ease the traffic burden for commuters.

The CATS board still has to decide whether to approve it. This decision should come sometime in February.
