CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- With weak high pressure building in from the south Friday, expect a day of dry weather before rain returns for the upcoming holiday weekend. Highs will warm into the mid to upper 50s Friday under partly cloudy skies.

Friday night will remain dry through at least midnight before showers begin to develop across the area by Saturday morning. While the showers will be light at first, a batch of moderate rainfall will move in ahead of a strong cold front by Saturday afternoon and evening. Behind this front exists a tight temperature gradient with much colder air. This will allow for the changeover from rain to snow in the mountains by Sunday morning. Accumulations aren't looking like much, however, with a half an inch to an inch possible.

As this system begins to depart Sunday, we'll look for rain exiting from west to east. Behind this, winds will pick up quite a bit in the mountains as a very cold air mass begins to move in. Monday morning will likely feature some of the coldest temperatures we've seen so far this season for MLK Day.
