CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It's been 10 years since the Miracle on the Hudson captivated the nation.

  • Flight 1549 left New York City and was heading to Charlotte
  • Birds hit the plane and caused a problem with the engine
  • Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and his crew safely landed the plane on the Hudson River

On January 15, 2009, flight 1549 left New York City and was heading to Charlotte. Quickly after taking off, birds hit the plane resulting in total engine failure.

Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and his crew safely landed the plane on the Hudson River, saving the lives of the 150 passengers. Tuesday, everyone came together at a luncheon in Uptown Charlotte to catch up and reflect on the last decade.

"You don't have to explain it. You just look at one another, and you know. Yeah, we did do that together," says passenger Jim Whitaker.

Some of the crew members and passengers remember the moment like it was yesterday.

"When he said 'Brace for impact', I was in the brace position. The guy seated next to me was looking out the window, and he said 'be ready, we're going in the water," says Vallie Collins, a passenger on the flight.

There was also a panel discussion with Capt. Sully, the flight crew and some of the passengers during the luncheon.
