SHALLOTTE, N.C. -- The man arrested Wednesday in a stabbing case that killed two people and injured a third in Shallotte made a brief court appearance in court Thursday morning.

A judge ordered he be held without bond.

The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office says the suspect, 30-year-old Torrence Helms, was taken into custody after the short vehicle chase, which ended in a crash on Ocean Highway West.

Authorities tell us the short chase reached speeds up to 105 mph.

This incident all began with a stabbing on Ivey Stone Court Wednesday morning. Theresa Rowell, age 55, and Dennis Rowell, age 66, both died from the stabbing. Irene Rowell, age 19, survived and is recovering. She is the one who reportedly called 911. The teen told the 911 operator that her family had been stabbed by a family friend and named the suspect.

NC Department of Public Safety says this isn't the first time Helms has been in trouble with the law. He has been arrested multiple times for breaking and entering, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He spent time behind bars on those charges.

Helms is charged with two counts of murder and attempted murder, as well as several other charges.
