CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It’s the thing we all wish we could have thought of first.

- They say to leave the investigation to law enforcement

Engineer and YouTube personality Mark Rober developed a revenge package for folks who steal stuff from outside our homes. It unleashes fine glitter and a smelly spray to these unsuspecting thieves with sticky fingers.
Legally though, can you booby trap to punish a porch pirate? Attorney Trey Lindley explained in North Carolina, you have a reasonable right to protect your property. However, the law values life over property.

“You can’t create a package that could harm someone,” said Lindley.
For example, the flatulence spray could cause an allergic reaction. Or the glitter, if sprayed while driving, could cause an accident.
“Peering at it at eye level when the glitter spins, there is a foreseeable risk it could get into someone’s eye,” Lindley said.
Many felt these thieves pretty much deserve it.
“That’s what I like about it the most,” explained Melissa Gale talking about the glitter. “I think you should have to think about it for a while when you decide to steal from people. You get what you get.”
“People stealing stuff off porches would probably not turn themselves in for getting glitter in their eye,” said Jay Seago.
If the videos have got the gears turning in your head, experts say stop thinking like Kevin McAllister and leave it up to the professionals.
“Home video cameras and that nature are important. Allowing the police to investigate and prosecute is the best,” said Lindley.
