CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Charlotte family who lost everything in a fire is getting help from an unexpected place.
- Emergency crews responded to a fire on December 11
- The house was destroyed
- Brand new furniture and Christmas presents were delivered
On December 11, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police and Charlotte Fire responded to a house on Village Lake Drive for a possible arson and domestic violence call.
The house was destroyed, and a family left without a home.
"The fact that it's close to Christmas, close to the holiday season, knowing that someone's been displaced from their home, and knowing that we have the means and the partnerships with various cooperations to help citizens, we felt it was our duty to do so," said officer Terence Funderburk with CMPD.
Three CMPD officers brought Christmas presents to the family's new apartment, and were shocked by what they saw.
"When we walked in and saw that there was an air mattress on the floor and that was about it," officer Rita Boric said.
The team made some calls, and Wednesday, brand new furniture was delivered to the family.
"It's very rewarding, it's very fulfilling. It's what I, and I know all the police that I know of got into this profession for that...is just the fundamental basis...to help people," officer Matthew Cooper said.
The officers also brought over dozens of wrapped presents for the family to open Christmas morning.
