ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. – Kimberly Austin, 56, faces additional charges after a school bus incident Monday.

Austin has already been cited with a DWI and driving left of center by the Highway Patrol. She now has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of child abuse by the sheriff’s office because she had her two grandchildren in the car.

She had just dropped off one child at West Alexander Middle School and was on the way to drop off the other when she hit the school bus on Icard Ridge Road. Of the 19 students on the bus, 13 were taken to area hospitals.

Officials say all except one are now back home. Before she was arrested by the sheriff's office Tuesday morning, Austin spoke to us at home. She admitted to drinking the night before, but said she was not under the influence at the time of the wreck.

“The night before that's what I told them. I drank the night before. I went to bed at 11:00,” she said.

Austin is facing a $10,000 bond. State Highway Patrol and the sheriff's office say more charges could be coming.
