ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. -- Questions into the ninth congressional district election continue to grow. The attention turns to a second North Carolina county where election officials say some unethical and potentially illegal activity occurred.
- One woman says a woman who claimed to be with Mark Harris' campaign came to her door
- An official says he received complaints from voters
- He says he was under the impression that the issue was being handled
The issues started this summer. Robeson County Board of Elections Chairman Steve Stone says people would come into the office with multiple voter registration applications and requests for absentee ballots as much as 50 to 70 at a time. Many of the forms, he says, were duplicates and even triplicates of existing voters.
The reason was soon discovered because Stone started getting complaints from voters. They told him people with official-looking lanyards came to their door and said their registration had been kicked out even though Stone says they hadn't.
Some of the voters would then fill out registration forms and even request an absentee ballot through the person. The state is starting to look into these issues, but Stone says when he told the state board of elections over the summer about this, not much was done.
“I was under the impression that they were looking into it,” he said.
Of the 2,300 absentee ballots they sent out, there were more than 1,000 they didn't get back. One woman says before sending in her and her husband's absentee ballots, someone who said she was from the Harris campaign came to her door with information only about Harris.
"She just explained ‘you know what, you did yours so do his the same way.’ My husband, he doesn’t know English so I just did his the same way. I signed mine, he signed his and that's how it went," Yamayra Rosada said.
Wednesday, the state came to take her ballot and gave her a receipt for her property.
