BURKE COUNTY, N.C. -- The quick actions of a student are being credited to saving a teacher at East Burke Middle School, who was going into cardiac arrest.
- Middle schooler Dalton Frazier walked into home room and noticed his substitute teacher, Johnny Childers on the floor
- Frazier checked Childers' pulse, yelled for help and eventually ran to get someone, fearing no one heard him
- That's when teacher Kelly Shook ran to grab an AED
On November 16, middle schooler Dalton Frazier walked into home room and noticed his substitute teacher, Johnny Childers on the floor with several tables moved over.
He didn't know it at the time but Childers was in cardiac arrest.
"I saw him laying on the floor, grasping the table, after I noticed the table was moved," said Frazier. "I heard him gasping for air and he was spitting up congestion."
Frazier checked Childers' pulse, yelled for help and eventually ran to get someone, fearing no one heard him.
That's when teacher Kelly Shook ran to grab an AED.
The superintendent of Burke County Schools says they're trying to get a second AED at the school, so there can be one on each end.
