CHARLOTTE, NC - Rick Curti has big dreams for baseball in the city of Charlotte.

  • The founder of the Charlotte Bats organization is working to get a major league team
  • MLB commissioner Rob Manfred spoke about expanding the league to include two more teams
  • Thanks to social media and his own word-of-mouth Curti has gained tens of thousands of supporters

“We're a grassroots movement to bring Major League Baseball to Charlotte,” says Curti.

The founder of the Charlotte Bats organization is working to get Major League Baseball to the Queen City.

“I don’t want to drive 5 hours to Atlanta to see the Braves, it’s too far for me. I'd rather have a team in my city that I can root for.”

He says it's a dream he's been working on since 2005, but it's getting closer to reality. In an interview earlier this month with Fox Sports, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred spoke about expanding the league to include two more teams. "We have a real list of cities that I think are not only interested in having baseball, but are viable in terms of baseball — places like Portland, Las Vegas, and Charlotte."

“This is something I’ve been doing since before Manfred became commissioner. It’s just so nice to hear the commissioner of MLB agree with us that that Charlotte would be a great place for MLB expansion,” says Curti.

Thanks to social media and his own word-of-mouth Curti has gained tens of thousands of supporters. He's even chosen the name, Charlotte Bats.

Curti says Charlotte's booming growth is a good draw for Major League Baseball but it's the high numbers of attendance for the Knights games that are an even bigger draw.

“People every day tell me thank you for doing this, because they say ‘I grew up in North Carolina and I've been wanting this forever.”
