CHARLOTTE –  Hundreds of people in Charlotte are using their hands to help end hunger.

  • 1,400 volunteers are packing 300,000 meals for families in need
  • The event has been going on for 16 years
  • McSweeney World Hunger Drive also focuses on sustainable food sources

The 16th annual Monsignor McSweeney World Hunger Drive at St. Matthew Church aims to send five truckloads of food and supplies around the world.

1,400 people are stuffing bags to make pre-packaged meals to be shipped as far as Haiti and Jamaica.

Volunteers will pack 300,000 meals over four shifts.

Some volunteers like Kip Roth say they bring their children along to make the assembly line packing a family affair.

“Service and the importance of giving back the importance of helping others,” he says. “Not everybody has it as good as we do in this country," Roth said.

Organizers say 10 percent of the meals will go to Charlotte-Mecklenburg area food pantries for families in need. The group says the program also focuses on sustainable food sources like providing irrigation, chickens, pigs and goats. You can find more information at Monsignor McSweeney World Hunger Drive.
