STATESVILLE, N.C. -- The driver of a speeding car died after hitting a utility pole in Statesville Sunday.      

The Statesville's police chief says an officer tried to stop the driver around 5 a.m. after the driver ran several red lights.          

Before the officer could pull the man over, the car crashed on East Front Street.

The driver died at the scene.

His name has not yet been released.
