MORGANTON, N.C. -- A community of Guatemalans living in Burke County want to do their part to help those suffering in their home country.

  • A volcano in Guatemala erupted and left at least 100 people dead
  • A local business is collecting donations to send
  • A Charlotte bakery is also sending items to those in need

Last Sunday, Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupted. So far, at least 100 are dead and nearly double that are missing. The Guatemalan Bakery and Store, which sits on the corner of Tate Street and Lenoir Road, is collecting donations.

They plan to fill the box with toiletries, canned food and medicine through next Tuesday. They then plan to ship to those in need in the country.

“Only God knows what will happen. The only thing we can do is pray and ask God to be merciful and send help however we can,” bakery employee Victoria Chajon said.

They also have a sister store in Charlotte also taking donations. Items can be dropped off at Panaderia y Restaurante La Guatemalteca which is located at 6132 North Tryon Street.
