CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say two rape cases from nearly 30 years ago are finally resolved.
Investigators say thanks to new technology, they found DNA that linked Warren Caldwell to the sexual assaults of a two teenagers in 1990 and 1994.
Sgt. Darrell Price with CMPD's Cold case and Sexual Assault unit says after decades of waiting, the victims are finally happy that justice will be served.
“They were extremely grateful, both are extremely positive and want to move forward with prosecution in both of these cases," Sgt. Price says. "They were extremely grateful though that this program takes place.”
Police say Caldwell is a registered sex offender and has been arrested more than 50 times. He has been charged with two counts of 2nd Degree Rape, as well as kidnapping and robbery.
State officials announced North Carolina has more than 15,000 untested rape kits.
