CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. -- Two people have been charged in connection to a serious health threat that sent more than a dozen Cabarrus County students to the hospital in the past 6 weeks.

Police arrested Fuad Alshaibi and Najmaldin Gobah for offering hundreds of bottles of cannabidiol, or CBD oil, at two separate Dream Tobacco and Vapes stores.

Cabarrus County EMS Director Alan Thompson says teens were vaping the oil, which can cause symptoms of rapid heartbeat, headaches, vomiting and seizures.

The substances are known by other names like sythetic marijuana, K2, spice and spike.

One student says this could be a good teaching moment for schools and health education.

"I wish we would learn about it. If I had known about that maybe I could have some better insight," said student Joseph Palko. "It's a hard thing to talk about but if we learn about that maybe we can make better decisions and know what to do and what not to do."

Thompson says he wants parents to understand CBD labeled or marketed products may not disclose their true contents, and not knowing exactly what is in the products could lead to a dangerous, even deadly, situation.
