CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Star linebacker Thomas Davis took to Twitter and apologized after delivering a helmet hit during Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers.

Coach Ron Rivera said davis didn't mean any harm. “I just take it that from the way he reacted, he did not intend to hit him high, or in the head,” Rivera said.

However, that didn't stop the league from announcing a stiff penalty against Davis.

The NFL announced Monday afternoon that Davis is suspended for two games. The league statement said Davis "delivered a violent and unnecessary blindside block" and called him a repeat offender.

Davis was fined earlier this year for a hit on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Adam Humphries.

Monday night, at his annual toy giveaway event, Davis told us he'll file an appeal.

“The league made a decision, then, you know, fortunately they have an appeals process,” he said. “We'll go through that. And from there whatever happens, happens.”

The team is also dealing with news that owner Jerry Richardson is stepping away from day-to-day operations and putting the team up for sale at the end of the season amid workplace misconduct allegations.

We asked him what his message is to fans as the fans are watching these headlines.

“You can cure a lot of things when you go out and win football games, especially for our fans,” he said. “You know, it's the mindset. There's a lot that's going on right now, like you said, but at the same time, as long as we continue to win and show up and do our jobs on Sundays, then you know, we can keep our fans happy.”
