MORGANTON, N.C. -- A firefighter was killed late Sunday night while trying to clear debris from a road in Morganton.

The Triple Community Fire Department said they received a call about a tree blocking U.S. Highway 70.

Forty-year old Jason Hensley responded to the scene in his personal vehicle.

While Hensley and other firefighters were clearing the tree a car hit Hensley, who was wearing reflective gear. He was killed instantly.

Troopers say 58-year-old Randall Stewart has been charged with driving while impaired and several other traffic and drug charges.

Hensley was a volunteer firefighter who just joined in March.

Hensley's funeral will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday at the First Baptist Church of Drexel at 200 South Main Street in Drexel.
