CHAPEL HILL- Town leaders and community members came together Sunday to honor those in the unmarked graves at the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery at UNC Chapel Hill.
Officials unveiled a new cemetery marker in an official ceremony.
"It makes it that much more important that we come together, as one, whenever we can, and I can think of no better way to do that than to honor the family and the descendants of those who rest here in this hallow ground," said Winston Crisp, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
The marker is actually a redo. Town officials placed a marker at the spot back in February, but it was shortly removed after complaints that the community and family members weren't involved.
"The people had the good intentions of wanting to honor people, but it hadn't been a community wide embracing of how to do that," said Mayor Pam Hemminger.
Kathy Atwater attended Sunday's ceremony out of respect for her many ancestors buried at the cemetery.
"They're the ones who built this university. They're the ones that worked for the faculty and the residents of Chapel Hill," she said.
The cemetery is located on South Road right across the street from the UNC School of Government.
