NORTH CAROLINA— A recent WalletHub study ranked five North Carolina cities as best and worst places for recreation.

Charlotte ranked 99th on the list of the 100 largest cities.

The study measured the recreational aspects of the 100 largest cities in the U.S. by "basic living costs, the quality of parks, the accessibility of entertainment and recreational facilities, as well as the climate.”

The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department says there are more than $130 million worth of projects in the works right now to add more green space and to improve what's already here.

"There is no question we need more indoor and outdoor pools, but we also need more tennis courts, we need more neighborhood parks and more greenway," said Jim Garges, director of Mecklenburg County Park and Rec. "There's no shortage of need, it's just a matter of trying to meet it as fast as you can in a city this size. You know, we're a million people."

Garges also pointed out the many nature preserves, neighborhood parks, aquatic centers and urban parks the area has. He says the county is committed to improving parks and rec options for the community.

Other North Carolina cities on the list include:

84. Durham

61. Greensboro

56. Raleigh

40. Winston-Salem
