WINDHAM, N.Y. -- Windham Mountain Golf Course was devastated by Tropical Storm Irene and the remnants of Lee back in 2011.

“The worst was obviously closest to the river right here at the golf course,” said Windham Mountain Resort President and General Manager Chip Seamans. "Four holes that were completely wiped out, fairways gone, tees gone, significant damage on all the other holes."

"Now Windham Mountain Resort has restored the golf course back to its original state and has made improvements to every one of our golf holes,” said Windham Country Club Director of Golf Brian Lowe.

Local leaders joined Windham Mountain representatives to celebrate the reopening of the 18-hole course.

After the storms, the owners at the time opened the golf course with limited holes. But in 2013, Windham Mountain Resorts bought the course, putting more than $2 million into the property.

"This golf course is a true community asset," said Seamans.

And resort representatives said the rebuilt course is getting national recognition. The American Junior Golf Association will stop in Windham next month during its national tour.

"They choose some of the finest courses in the country to be able to participate, and we’re excited to show the country what the golf course looks like,” said Seamans.

Representatives of the Windham Chamber of Commerce said having a thriving golf course is great for the economy.

"It gives visitors a reason to come here and enjoy. So the tourism dollars are very important, and it all filters down to our restaurants and our lodges,” said Windham Chamber of Commerce President Lisa Jaeger.
