BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont's new police chief will have to take 600 hours of basic law enforcement training before he can wear a badge again.
This comes after the Gaston Gazette reports Chief H.C. "Skip" Clark isn't certified to be a law enforcement officer in North Carolina.
City leaders tell the paper they knew when they hired Clark that his certification had lapsed after he retired as chief of police in Peachtree City, Georgia, back in 2014.
