NEW YORK—Tuesday marks 35 years since the death of music icon John Lennon.
The Beatles co-founder was shot and killed on Dec. 8, 1980 in front of his Manhattan apartment building. His killer, Mark David Chapman, is still in prison and has been turned down for parole seven times.
Five years after his murder, New York City dedicated a section of Central Park as Strawberry Fields in honor of the musician. Lennon, who together with Paul McCartney fronted one of the most influential rock bands in history, would be 75-years-old on Tuesday.
His widow, Yoko Ono, thinks he would have embraced the many changes since his death, saying he would, "Be on a computer all day and night."
The song Imagine was co-produced by Lennon and Ono and became the best-selling solo of Lennon’s career. The lyrics encourage the listener to imagine world peace without any barriers of borders or divisions by religion or nationality.
