CHARLOTTE -- UNC Charlotte is tearing down the Belk Tower. The chancellor made that announcement on Friday.

The tower was built in 1970 and has significant structural problems the university says includes age-related corrosion, water penetration and rust.

Restoring the building would cost about $1 million, and with the Belk family's support, they'll be taking it down over Christmas break and redesigning the area of campus called Belk Plaza.

While they say the deterioration does not pose an immediate threat, a fence will be built to ensure safety.
