CHARLOTTE – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney says he stands by the decision to charge Officer Randall Kerrick with voluntary manslaughter following the shooting death of Jonathan Ferrell.

Now that a mistrial was declared, the chief is focused on the department moving forward. He says the department needs to be open to changes and improvements.

Putney said he's changed training staff to ensure no misinterpretations of policies in the future, and that the department is doing a better job to make sure only the best become officers. For example, keeping records on those who succeed and those who fail.

“I'm still trying to give everyone an opportunity for success, but when you fail and you fail repeatedly, this may not be the job for you,” Putney said. “I have given clear direction to the training staff out here, you get reps, opportunities and then we determine whether or not you can apply the knowledge we're giving you.”

You can hear more from Putney during our sit-down, 1-on-1 interview later this evening.
